Balakən (also, Balakän, Balakon, Belokan, and Belokany; Azerbaijani: Balakən; Avar: Билкан) (Urdu: بالاکن) is a city and municipality in, and the capital of, the Balakan Rayon of Azerbaijan.
History:
In 1965, Balakən gained city status after Azerbaijani government's approval.
Economy:
The economy of Balakən is partially agricultural, partially tourist based, with some industries in operation.

The demography of Balakan consists of mostly the Azerbaijani, Avar and Ingiloy. As long as population concerns, Balakan is a small city and it consists only about 1000 people according to the census of 2008.
Cuisine:
Balakən's signature cuisine includes maxara, cüttü, and chicken chigirtma and Balakən halva.
