Brojomohun College (BM College), Barisal, Bangladesh
Brojomohun College (Bengali: ব্রজমোহন কলেজ), often known as BM College, B. M. University College, is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Bangladesh. It is located in the town of Barisal in South-Western Bangladesh.

Though Barisal was called the "Venice of the East" and "Crop House of Bengal", the town's education sector was not strong, as it was geographically far from both Dhaka and Calcutta. Barisal Zilla School was established in 1854, but the school was not large enough to serve the rapidly growing numbers of students. To solve the problem, Mahatma Ashwini Kumar Dutta started a new school in 1884. As there was no facility of higher education, the district magistrate at that time, Ramesh Chandra Dutta, requested Mahatma Ashwini Kumar Dutta to establish a college. On June 14, 1889, Aswini Kumar Dutta founded Brojo Mohan College.

The first principal of the college was Babu Gyan Chandra Chowdhury. While Ashwini Kumar Dutta taught English and Logic, Kali Prasanna Ghosh taught History and Kamini Kumar BidyaRatna taught Sanskrit and Bengali. In 1898, BM College was transformed into a "First Grade College" from a "Second Grade College". In 1912, the college went to the Govt. management from personal management strategy. From 1889 to 1917 the regular activities of the college took place in BM School campus. The college was relocated to its own present complex in 1917.

From the very beginning the college was so dynamic and the results were very good. The teachers of that time were skilled, so Calcutta University started an Honors course in English and Philosophy in 1922, Sanskrit and Mathematics in 1925, Chemistry in 1928, and Economics in 1929. In 1928, Shirimoti Shanti Sudha Ghosh stood First class First in Honors in Mathematics from Calcutta University.

The time from 1922 to 1948 is called the "Golden Period" of the college. The governor of Bengal at that time, Sir Udbarn, once commented on BM College, "The college promises some day to challenge the supremacy of the metropolitan (Presidency) College."

Due to the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, the college lacked teachers and the student body fell to one third of its post-war size. This made it difficult to teach the same numbers of courses and as a result the two year Honors curriculum conducted by Calcutta University was replaced with the three Honors curriculum of Dhaka University. As a consequence, Honors courses except Mathematics were abolished in 1950. In 1952, Honors in Mathematics had also been eradicated. During the 1964-65 session, Honors in Economics restarted. Several other Honors and Masters Courses of various subjects started between 1972 to the 2005-06 sessions.

The time since 1965 has been called the "Age of Enrichment" of the college. Former principal Prof. Mohammad Hanif is called the "Architect of Modern Brojo Mohun College". There are currently 20 degree (pass) courses, 18 Honors courses and 19 Masters courses at BM College. H.S.C. course have been abolished since 1999.

Barisal Cadet College
Barisal Cadet College (Bengali: বরিশাল ক্যাডেট কলেজ), is a military high school in Rahmatpur, Babuganj, Barisal, Bangladesh. It is located 12 km from Barisal, beside the Dhaka Barisal highway.

Before the independence of Bangladesh, the then Pakistan government established four cadet colleges by following British public schools' model. After independence, due to the success of those schools, Bangladesh Defense Force kept those colleges (which are High schools by American definition) and established eight more Cadet Colleges (three girls and five 5 boys).

Previously, it was Barisal Residential Model College. In 1981 Bangladesh government converted this into a cadet college. Its first principal was Mr Md. Mufazzal Husain who was also the project director during initial phase of development. As a cadet college, it consistently has a large number of placements of its alumni in the national armed forces. In addition, it is notable for its results in the national exams at the secondary school and higher secondary level and the placements of its alumni in the national universities.in the recent few years this prestigious institution is making excellent result and reaching the acme of success.

Barisal Cadet College boards approximately 300 boys between the ages of 12 and 18 (roughly 50 in each year for grade-7 ) through a nationwide admission test composed of written, oral and medical examinations. The school is headed by a Principal, appointed by the Adjutant General's Branch of Bangladesh Army. It contains three houses- Shariatullah, Suhrwardy and Sher-e-Bangla, each headed by a housemaster, selected from among the senior members of the teaching staff.

Barisal Polytechnic Institute
Barisal Polytechnic Institute (Bengali: বরিশাল পলিটেকনিক ইন্সটিউট) or BPI is a Government Technical Institute in Barisal, Bangladesh. It is one of the largest Polytechnic Institutes in Bangladesh. The institute was established in 1962.BPI is located at Alekanda in Barisal city, in Bangladesh. It offers Diploma-level programmes for engineering students in many different technological areas.

After completing the SSC level (10th grade, also known as 'O' level, or 'Dakhil' level) a student can pursue his or her educational career, to obtain a "Diploma-in-Engineering" degree which falls within the "Technical Education System" from Polytechnic Institutes, or they can obtain a HSC (12th grade, also known as 'A' level, or 'Intermediate' level, or 'Alim' level) certificate degree, which falls within the "General Education System" from various other academic colleges (HSC being the mainstream study line in South-Asian countries). HSC courses focus mainly on the Sciences, Arts, Commerce, Business, Law, Medicine, etc., whereas Diploma-in-Engineering courses in Polytechnic Institutes focus mainly on Technology (Applied & Practical Sciences) areas.

The "Diploma-in-Engineering" degree is rated higher than the HSC certificate, and both are lesser than a formal Baccalaureate or BSc (Bachelor in Science) degree. They are the entry level diplomas for enrolling into any B.Sc in engineering degrees. Students which complete the Diploma-in-Engineering (4 year-long curriculum) courses acquire an educational level equivalent to grade XIV (14th grade); students who complete the HSC level (2 year-long curriculum), acquire an educational level equivalent to grade XII (12th grade). Most of the diploma-in-engineering curricula were extended from a 3 year study period to a 4 year-long study period. In the "Madrasah Education System", 14th grade is also known as 'Fazil' level.

A diploma degree should not to be confused with a European or American "Diploma", which usually consists of a year-long educational curriculum in order to obtain a (Diploma) "certificate", not a Degree. In those geographical areas, various Science and Technical subjects are offered to obtain an "Associate" degree which includes a minimum of 2 years' curriculum, and is also transferable toward obtaining a Bachelor degree. It comes closest to a South-Asian "Diploma-in-Engineering" degree, where such "Associate" degrees are still 2 years longer than a South-Asian degree. Even though a few other types of "Associate" degrees (1 yr or 2 yr) are offered in some Occupational areas, those are (usually) nontransferable, so such "Associate" degrees are considered of a lesser level than a South-Asian "Diploma-in-Engineering" degree.

After completing a Diploma-in-Engineering or a HSC students can further pursue their educational careers to obtain a formal Bachelor degree in one of the following two categories: "Pass" (3 years) or "Honours" (4 years) from various Public or Private Universities. Diploma Engineers can also enrol in Technology Universities to obtain the BSc (Tech.Edn) or BSc.Eng (Engineering) degrees, which include a 2.5-3 years shorter curriculum, because students have already completed various required subjects in the level during their previous courses. After completing this BSc level, students reach grade XVI (16th grade). Diploma students can also enrol in any other Public or Private Universities. Likewise, when HSC-degree holders complete a formal Bachelor (Hons), BSc.Eng (Engineering), BSc.Agr (Agriculture), BSc.Text (Textile), BSc.Leat (Leather) or LLB (Hons) they reach the Grade XVI (16th grade) level, which has at least a 4 year-long curriculum. Many HSC-degree holders decide to obtain a formal BSc or Bachelor degree "Pass" only, which is actually a 3 year-long course (15th grade).

One of the professional societies of engineers, the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), conducts a specially designed engineering course, upon completion of which trainees can appear at Associate Membership Examinations Part A and Part B. After succeeding in these examinations trainees become an Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers (AMIE). The certificate awarded to those who pass this examination is recognized by public and private sector organizations in the country as equivalent to a formal degree in Engineering. With an AMIE degree it is possible to obtain the same jobs as engineers holding Bachelor's degrees. Other engineering associations and societies are the Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB), the Association of Consulting Engineers, the Association of Self-Employed Engineers, the Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Geotechnical Engineers. These are optional subscriptions for Diploma-in-Engineering degree holders, including other Public and Private Universities.

There are two male and one female dormitories. About three hundred residential students stay there. One of them is situated in the main campus and the other in the residential campus. Dormitories are currently under construction. After completion, the facilities and capacity of the residences will be increased.

Halls:
  • Main hall
  • New Hall
  • Ladies Hall
The Institute operates under the executive control of the Ministry of Education(MOE), acting through the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE). The academic programmes are regulated by the Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB). BTEB functions under the Directorate of Inspections and Audits (DIA), which in turn functions under the Chief Accounts Office (CAO), and it functions under the MOE.
